MELBOURNE AFL Captain Max Gawn has put pen to paper on a new contract, signing on with the Demons until the end of 2027.
The fresh deal will see the ruckman, who was already locked in for next season, extend his time in the red and blue to an incredible 18 years, having joined the club during the 2009 AFL Draft.
The Demons skipper, who officially signed on Sunday, spoke to the decision, and what the club means to him and his family.
“The Melbourne Football Club has been part of my life for a significant number of years. It is home for me and my family,” Gawn said.
“I absolutely love the club and everyone in it, from my teammates and coaches to the staff and supporters. The people make this club so special.
“It is an honour to pull on the red and blue guernsey each week and play for the Melbourne faithful. I count myself lucky that I have the opportunity to do so for another couple of years, and can’t thank our members and fans enough for all their continued support.
“I look forward to finishing off this season strongly, before getting to work on 2025.”
Gawn, a six-time All-Australian and two-time Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy winner, was drafted with pick No.34 in 2009 and has gone on to represent his club 223 times.
Having been appointed captain in 2020, this season marked his fifth consecutive year at the helm, with the skipper’s influence felt far and wide throughout the club.
“Max is the ultimate professional, and a terrific leader of our football club,” Melbourne AFL List Manager Tim Lamb said.
“To have him sign on and commit to our program for an additional two years is incredibly exciting – not only for our players, coaches and staff, but for all those whose hearts bleed red and blue.
“Max’s on-field impact is unmatched, as is his hunger to continue to improve. He wants to grow his game and get the best out of himself, and helps those around him do the same.
“This, combined with his leadership style, is why we love him so much. Max personifies the Demon Spirit, and we’re thrilled to have him commit his future to the club.”
