The annual Big Freeze match between Melbourne and Collingwood has given the AFL community many highlights over the last decade, with Big Freeze 10 set to be no exception.
In support of Neale Daniher’s FightMND, the Big Freeze match raises vital awareness and funds to fight ‘the Beast’ that is Motor Neurone Disease.
To celebrate 10 years of Big Freeze, we brought together some Demon sliders who have braved the ice. While not all were able to be present, we made sure to honour their contribution to Daniher's fight.
Look back on the last ten years of Demon sliders who have made a splash in support of FightMND:
Slider 9: Garry Lyon (Big Freeze 1)
As a close friend of Neale Daniher, Lyon was one of the first to be nominated to test out the famous slide in the inaugural Big Freeze game.
Donning a wetsuit and goggles, Lyon was prepared for the icy bath.
Great mate David Neitz wore goggles in the photo taken early in the week to represent Lyon’s costume.
Slider 31: Simon Goodwin (Big Freeze 4)
Big Freeze 4 saw all 18 AFL coaches take the plunge for FightMND, and Simon Goodwin was first to take on the slide.
Fans voted for Goodwin to dress in a full 1980s ski suit, complete with goggles, for his freezing plunge.
Slider 39: Alan Richardson (Big Freeze 4)
As the former Saints coach, Alan Richardson dressed as well-known AFL reporter, Mark Robinson for his trip down the slide.
In a full suit and bald cap, Richardson looked almost identical to the veteran journalist.
Slider 70: Ben Brown (Big Freeze 6)
While no Big Freeze game was played in 2020, the iconic slide TV event still took place, with playing representatives from each club participating.
Still playing for North Melbourne at the time, Ben Brown took part in the DIY COVID-era jump in the ice baths at Arden Street.
Taking a cue from his famous curly hair, Brown dressed as Simpson’s character Sideshow Bob, with his orange jumpsuit and knife.
Sliders 81: Christian Petracca/Angus Brayshaw (Big Freeze 6)
Heeding the call from Neale Daniher to keep the slider tradition alive during COVID, Christian Petracca and Angus Brayshaw created a makeshift slide at Casey Fields to ensure they still had the full Big Freeze experience.
Petracca dressed as Happy Gilmore in an American hockey jersey, with Brayshaw as his caddy.
Trac paid tribute to Brayshaw in the photo taken earlier in the week, holding a golf club to represent his co-slider.
Slider 83: Daisy Pearce (Big Freeze 7)
With 2021 another COVID year for Big Freeze, the game was moved to the SCG to be played in front of crowds.
The iconic slide was still erected in an empty MCG, to ensure the institution could continue.
Daisy Pearce, dressed as the iconic cartoon character Bluey, embraced the atmosphere despite the empty stands.
She was represented in the photo taken earlier in the week by former teammate Tayla Harris, holding a Bluey mask.
Slider 84: Jeff Farmer (Big Freeze 7)
Known as ‘The Wiz’, Farmer was coached by Daniher and so has a special relationship to his old mentor.
Dressed in only Harry Potter glasses and holding a wand, Farmer wasn’t afraid to strip off for his plunge down the slide.
Slider 88: Russel Howcroft (Big Freeze 7)
Like Farmer, radio and TV personality Russel Howcroft was also unafraid to bare some skin to show his support for Daniher and FightMND.
Howcroft literally wore his love for the Dees on his chest, painting a giant red and blue heart on his torso.
In the photo taken earlier in the week, Daniher wore a Dees scarf to represent Howcroft’s iconic costume.
Slider 97: Hamish Blake (Big Freeze 8)
Radio and TV personality Hamish Blake took Big Freeze literally, wearing an Elsa costume from the movie Frozen.
This was the first year that the Big Freeze match had been played at the MCG in front of fans since 2019, and the sea of blue beanies in the crowd was certainly a sight to behold.
In the photo taken earlier in the week, Jeff Farmer held a snowflake to represent Blake’s chilly costume.
Slider 100: David Neitz (Big Freeze 8)
Neale Daniher chose a special slider for his number 100, Melbourne legend and club record-holder, David Neitz.
Neitz, who was coached by Daniher, paid tribute to his coach by dressing as William Wallace from the movie Braveheart.
Complete with sword and kilt, Neitz’s costume was a nod to Daniher, who he called “the bravest player he had ever met”.
Slider 105: Tayla Harris (Big Freeze 9)
Six weeks out from the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Harris took on the slide dressed as Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr.
Complete with captain’s armband, Harris’ tribute to one of Australia’s greatest female athletes was appreciated by the crowd.
