MELBOURNE AFLW have announced which players will don new numbers for the upcoming 2024 season, with the iconic number 6 guernsey returning to the field.
Speedy forward Alyssa Bannan will wear the number previously left by club legend Daisy Pearce; the first time the number has been worn since Pearce retired in 2022.
The club added eight new recruits to its list for the 2024 season, who have all been assigned new numbers.
Read about the number changes below:
No. 3 – Alyssia Pisano
New recruit Alyssia Pisano has taken the number 3 guernsey this season, following Maddi Gay moving to Essendon during the 2023 Trade Period.
Pisano was drafted to the club with pick number 5, coming to the Dees from the Eastern Ranges.
No. 9 – Georgia Gall
Previously wearing number 27, Gall will don the number 9 previously worn by Libby Birch, who moved to North Melbourne in the 2023 Trade Period.
Gall was picked in the 2022 AFLW draft as a cross coder from the Melbourne Stars BBL cricket team, and made her debut in Round 9 2023 against Fremantle.
No. 11 – Delany Madigan
Taken at pick number 55 in the 2023 draft, Madigan hails from the Eastern Ranges.
She will wear the number 11 guernsey formerly worn by Eliza West, who moved to Hawthorn in the 2023 Trade Period.
No. 12 – Ryleigh Wotherspoon
With Georgina Fowler retiring at the end of the 2023 season, Ryleigh Wotherspoon will take the number 12 guernsey.
Chosen at pick number 12 in the draft, Wotherspoon is an established cricket player and has recently returned to football, training with Brisbane AFLW to build her skills.
No. 16 – Grace Beasley
Taking the guernsey vacated by Alyssa Bannan, Grace Beasley will wear the number 16 in 2024.
Beasley was recently signed as a rookie, filling the final list spot. Beasley has been playing college basketball since 2018 and will return to her native Melbourne for the 2024 season. The 170cm guard first came to recruiters’ attention as a 17-year-old, and brings new skills and leadership experience to the group.
No. 19 – Grace Hill
Hill, who moved from GWS in the 2023 Trade Period, will retain the number 19 she wore in Giants colours.
The number 19 at Melbourne was worn in 2023 by Jordan Ivey, who was delisted at the end of the season.
No. 25 – Jacinta Hose
With Samantha Johnson returning to Casey VFLW at the completion of the 2023 season, she leaves the number 25 guernsey available to Jacinta Hose.
Hose was selected with pick number 24 in the draft, but will not play in 2024 as she recovers from dual ACL injuries.
No. 33 – Lily Johnson
Joining Melbourne from Port Adelaide, Johnson joined as part of the 11-club mega-trade that took place on the final day of the 2023 Trade Period. At Port Adelaide, Johnson wore the number 23.
No. 43 – Jemma Rigoni
Jemma Rigoni, whose father Guy Rigoni played 107 games for the Dees, will wear the number 43 made famous by her father between 1998-2005.
