CASEY put up a valiant fight in Round 10 of the Rebel VFLW but ultimately fell to the Darebin Falcons by 21 points.
The opening term was challenging for the Demons, as they struggled to find the goals, managing only a solitary behind. Darebin, meanwhile, took advantage, ending the first quarter with a 14-point lead.
Casey rallied in the second quarter with an impressive defensive effort, led by Tegan Williams. Williams was instrumental in defence, particularly during the second quarter when Casey kept Darebin goalless.
Williams amassed 16 disposals and demonstrated great composure and skill in thwarting Darebin’s attacks. Her efforts at half-back were crucial in maintaining Casey’s structure and preventing further damage on the scoreboard.
The highlight of the first half came just before the main break when captain Ally Kirkwood stepped up. Kirkwood slotted a crucial goal after the siren, narrowing Darebin's lead to just one point and bringing the halftime score to 2.4 (16) to 2.3 (15). Her leadership on and off the field was evident as she guided her team through challenging moments.
The third quarter saw a momentary shift in momentum, as the scores were briefly tied. However, Darebin responded with three consecutive goals, pulling away from Casey again.
Sarah D’arcy showcased her forward expertise, kicking two goals and proving to be a constant threat in the attacking 50. Her gutsy performance and forward pressure created scoring opportunities for Casey.
Niamh O’Neill was another standout, taking several impressive marks and contributing a goal, reflecting her relentless effort around the ball.
Zoe Mitchell topped the stat sheet for Casey with 17 disposals, seven tackles, and four clearances.
Meg Macdonald was equally tenacious, gathering 17 disposals and applying constant pressure on Darebin's midfield.
Entering the final quarter with a 19-point gap, Casey continued to fight fearlessly. However, Darebin's defence held firm, and despite Casey's pressure and efforts, the Demons could only add a single goal to their tally, finishing the game at 4.4 (28) to Darebin’s 7.7 (49).
The Dees will look to bounce back from this defeat as they face Carlton at IKON Park next Saturday. With the positive signs shown in their tackling (55 tackles for the game) and the individual performances of key players, the Demons have plenty to build on for their upcoming clash.
