Melbourne comfortably accounted for Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon, as star forward Bayley Fritsch soared with five goals.

The Demons as good as put the contest to bed in the opening term, leading by 32 points at the first break on the way to the 14.9 (93) to 5.8 (38) win at the MCG.

While Fritsch was the top Demon of the night with his bag of five, Christian Petracca and Jack Viney were also imperious in the midfield, providing plenty for their teammates, Melbourne dominating clearances 11-1 and inside 50s 14-5 in the first term.

Predictably, the Hawks changed their strategy at the first break and tried taking on the game more. They outscored the Demons in the second term with two goals to one.

But it wasn't long before the Demons kicked clear with eight goals to three in the second half, thanks to a flurry of Demons including Fritsch, Jacob van Rooyen, Kade Chandler, Christian Petracca and Tom Sparrow.

Melbourne's Alex Neal-Bullen was an unsung hero of the match, registering 24 disposals, six tackles and seven score involvements, while Kysaiah Pickett also impressed with four goals.

Demon defensive duo Steven May and Jake Lever were both ruled out of the game due to their respective injury concerns, with Melbourne to provide further updates in the coming days.
