MELBOURNE midfielder Nathan Jones says he will become a better player thanks to the club's acquisition of No.1 NAB AFL Draft pick Tom Scully.

Although Scully has yet to debut - he is almost certain to play his first AFL match against Hawthorn at the MCG this Saturday - Jones said his new Melbourne teammate had already helped him improve.

"He's going to bring the best out of me and bring the best out of other players at the footy club, so I really can't wait to see him in action. Hopefully he gets his chance this week," Jones told afl.com.au.

"He's a pretty mature kid; he's come in and had a big impact on the group and you could see why he went No.1 with the performances he's put in over the pre-season."

The 22-year-old took Scully under his wing when he arrived at Melbourne - the pair knew each other through their playing connections with the Dandenong Stingrays.

"I've had a really good relationship with Tommy Scully," Jones said.

"He's going to be a part of this successful side that's going to be put out on the park every week. I want to be involved in that as well and I will be involved in that.

"That competitiveness is something that we're trying to breed throughout the footy club and it's what we want to ultimately lead to success."

Now in his fifth AFL season, Jones said he was "jumping out of his skin" for the season proper. And his sights were firmly on becoming a top-line midfielder in 2010.

"I've been real happy with my pre-season form. I played pretty well over the four games, so I'm really looking to establish myself fully as a quality AFL player," he said.

"You look up to the greats that are playing now and that's what I'm aspiring to do.

"I've worked on different facets of the game in the pre-season and now I'm just hanging out to see how well I perform, under the heat, throughout the year for hopefully an improved year from the footy club."

Meanwhile, teammate Brent Moloney believed facing a Hawthorn team missing star full-forward Lance Franklin in round one could help the Demons cause a boilover.

"He's a champion and they've got a few players out as well, so hopefully we can get them cold," Moloney said.

"If we can sustain a high level of intensity for longer, we're in with a show - and we can't wait for the first bounce really."
