MELBOURNE defender James Frawley has been ruled out of Saturday night's clash against Essendon with a foot injury.

The 2010 All-Australian has been carrying a plantar fascia irritation for several weeks.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said Frawley was ruled out after pulling up sore after training on Friday.

Mahoney expects Frawley will be fit to play against Collingwood in round 11.

The versatile James Sellar has come into the team to replace Frawley and Cale Morton has been named as an emergency.

Frawley has been managing the injury for several weeks and had scans on Monday to determine whether there had been any deterioration in the foot.

Following the scans the club was still hopeful he would be able to play this week and coach Mark Neeld said before training that he expected Frawley to play.

However the former All-Australian and one of the Demons' most consistent players this season will miss his second game for the season.

He did not play against St Kilda in round 5 when Melbourne lost by 18 points
