We let Green down: Spencer
Jake Spencer says the Demons let down 2010 best and fairest and former skipper Brad Green in his 250th match against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturd
The big man said the players were disappointed they couldn’t produce a four quarter effort for Green in his milestone match.
Five things we learned in round 18
“We talked about it throughout the week, and we thought we’d be a real show, but when you keep giving teams starts like that, it puts you on the back foot,” he said.
“As Neeldy (coach Mark Neeld) said to us, when you put in 75 per cent efforts, you get 75 per cent results.
“It was a disappointing day for the club and Greeny, because we really wanted to get up for him, and it’s a real shame that we didn’t have a crack for four quarters.”
Spencer said the Dees had mixed indicators throughout the contest.
“Statistically, in our KPIs, we weren’t too far off in the first quarter,” he said.
“They were just better than us at the end of the day, but we’ve got to get rid of these fade outs in quarters.
“In the third quarter, we weren’t good enough and we didn’t have a crack and our KPIs showed that, so that’s the disappointing thing.”
Spencer, who played his twelfth match for the Demons and his fourth this year after overcoming a year out of the game due to a knee injury, said he was relishing the opportunity at the highest level.
But he was adamant that he needed to keep striving to make it.
“I let the team down a few times, ball watching and with some defensive efforts,” he said.
“But it was probably the best I’ve rucked I’d say. It’s an area I need to keep knuckling down on, if I’m to gain another contract.
“So I’ve got the glass half full.”
