A poem written by Megan Waters that captures the history, culture + impact of our First Peoples.
This Nation is home to a culture that’s over 60,000 years strong.
Our bloodlines extend beyond time as we know it, our history is long.
As First Peoples of this continent, we have an innate ability for storytelling,
And we express our ancestral wisdom, through dance, art and song.
We are the oldest, continuous, custodians of these lands, waters and skies.
If only you could all view ‘Country’ through our eyes.
Resilience is engrained in us.
Determination comes from the pain within us.
Knowledge is our superpower.
Pride, our biggest motivator.
Football is an artform and our mob are the narrators,
On the oval our mob are heroes, they are moment makers, they are creators.
Indigenous Round is an opportunity, to celebrate our community,
To strive toward a better future, one with a lot more unity.
It’s a time to come together and listen to our stories,
To learn from our ancient kinship and lore,
So we can all move forward, feeling empowered to do more.
We pay tribute to our AFLW pioneers, the ones paving the path,
And honour Narrm Football Club’s former First Nations stars.
We thank you for being the amazing leaders you are.
