MELBOURNE dynamo Aaron Davey says Indigenous Round is a great opportunity to celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players who have made a significant contribution to the game.

Speaking at the Junction Oval on Wednesday, Davey said the round also brought hope for indigenous players aspiring to play at the highest level.

"It's a great recognition not only for myself but for a lot of the Aboriginal guys that are playing in the AFL these days," he said.

"What it also does is give us an opportunity to not only represent ourselves, but our families and our people up in Darwin and also my people in the Port Lincoln and Ceduna area. It's one [round] that I'm proud to be a part of.

"In 10 years time, it could be something like the NBA. There could be a lot of indigenous guys and limited – how do I say it – white guys," he added with a laugh.

Davey was more circumspect though when talking about his own form, which has been red-hot so far in 2009.

"I think it's more that I've got my body right," he said.

"I've been more consistent over the last few years and I've been on and off with injuries, but another thing behind it is that I've done my first full pre-season for about three years.

"I feel heaps better and I'm just glad to be playing consistent footy."

Davey has exemplified Melbourne’s better disposals skills this season, particularly by foot. It is an improvement he puts down to the coaching staff.

"What we have done over the pre-season at Melbourne is really focus on our kicking  techniques, with (development coach) Kelly O'Donnell, so we'll give him a bit of a rap," he said.

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said it was difficult for Davey to assess his 2009 form without his overall career.

"It's very hard for Aaron to make a comparison – whether his form has been the best it's ever been, compared to another part of his career," he said.

"We do know that Aaron's pre-season was very good and he was very diligent in his pre-season and he didn't miss too many sessions.

"He's worked constantly hard and he's just getting the reward for the effort. You'll find most players who have a good year that it's not a coincidence that they have very good pre-seasons."

Bailey said Davey's leadership and attitude were areas he had significantly improved.

"He's been fantastic for us up until this point in time, but he needs to continue on with his consistency, which he's worked on and it's been a big focus for him, so a big pat on the back for him," he said.

"I said to him before: 'I reckon you might be just a little bit ahead of Alwyn', because they're very competitive the Davey boys, don't worry about that that."
