NATHAN Jones has reiterated he would love to captain Melbourne, but has taken a philosophical approach on the matter entering the Christmas/New Year break.
The Demons are set to announce their new leadership group in February, but Jones said he would “go through the process like all of the other boys” and see what unfolds.
“What will be, will be, but I’d love to lead the footy club and if that opportunity arose, I’m more than capable,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“[Am I] the perfect candidate? You’d be silly to think to that anyone was perfect, however I’ve got the skills to hopefully [be a captain], but there’s still plenty of areas I’ve got to develop.
“Whoever is the captain, the entire group is developing skills, whether you’re leading with or without a title.”
Jones said he had relished the involvement of Leading Teams so far in the leadership process and he believed it was already reaping benefits.
“I’m really enjoying [Leading Teams]. I’ve been involved in it before, but this time it’s been a whole buy-in. We’ve done it for a month or so and it’s been really powerful. As a group, we’re really developing in that [leadership] area,” he said.
“I think the process is really important in finding the correct leadership group for this year and beyond, but more importantly, it’s developing a team dynamic and skilling the players to hold each other accountable and improve.
“I couldn’t be happier with how it’s been going so far and I think it’s really exciting. It encourages players to come out of their comfort zone and share themselves with the boys and you get to know them on a deeper level, which can only help that team morale and team dynamic.”
