THE ARRIVAL of Melbourne legend Jim Stynes as Chairman at Melbourne Football Club has been welcomed with open arms by coach Dean Bailey.

The bad news about increasing debt has been offset by the increase in membership since the 1991 Brownlow Medallist assumed the job. The total has surged past last year's, with more than 1000 joining since last week.

Bailey was enthusiastic when asked about Stynes' influence around the club.

"Jimmy was here last Saturday, and he spoke to the playing group just before training. He's very enthusiastic, Jimmy, and he's got some drive in him, and some really strong passion for the club, and enthusiasm for the club," he said.

"I think the membership's bumped up since Jimmy's come on board, so he's having a great influence, and I think he's going to be a really positive force around the club for years to come.

"He's been nothing but supportive and very excited, and the players see that.

"The record that he's got – hopefully that'll translate into a stronger passionate football club, and Melbourne members and supporters."
