CASEY has lost an extraordinary game to Footscray by just one-point at Whitten Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs 12.12 (84) defeated the Scorpions 13.5 (83) to inflict a heartbreaking loss, which was dominated by strong wind conditions.
It was just Casey’s third loss of the season.
Midfielder Alex Neal-Bullen had an outstanding match for Casey, notching up 37 disposals and a goal.
Defender Lynden Dunn and first-year player Clayton Oliver had 25 possessions each.
Backman Colin Garland claimed 23 touches, along with former Melbourne co-captain Jack Trengove, who also chipped in with a goal.
Tough-nut Tomas Bugg gained 22 disposals and ruckman Jake Spencer had 21 touches and a goal.
Casey-listed key forward Tim Smith was his side’s leading goalkicker with three goals, as utility Ben Newton kicked two majors.
The match started positively for Casey, when Dean Terlich kicked the first for the day. From that point, Casey dominated the term, leading by 21 points at quarter-time.
Kicking with the wind in the second term, the Bulldogs hit back to lead by 17 points at half-time.
Again, the wind played a major factor after the main break, as Casey bounced back to lead by 30 points at the final change.
But then the game went right down to the wire. In the end, Footscray capped off a remarkable game, winning by just the narrowest of margins.
