FROM Round 7 (April 29 onwards) of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), manager of the MCG and its precinct, will introduce a fully pre-paid parking system in Yarra Park for patrons attending event days at the MCG.
All patrons will need to pre-purchase a ticket through the MCG website to park their cars in Yarra Park, following the successful introduction of pre-paid parking for accessibility permit holders in 2022.
Tickets to park in Yarra Park can be purchased at any point prior to the first bounce of an AFL match at the MCG (subject to the match status and conditions) until capacity is reached and sales are exhausted, ensuring patrons planning to drive to the MCG on game days have a guaranteed spot to park their vehicle.
Parking in Yarra Park is not available for MCG matches where a high crowd attendance is forecast in order to allow for an uninterrupted and safe entry and exit from the stadium.
In the event of continual poor weather or heavy rains, the MCC may also close Yarra Park for parking to allow the heritage-listed parkland to recover and maintain its condition.
Melbourne Cricket Club General Manager of Venue and Event Services, Josh Eltringham, said the move to pre-paid parking elevates the game day experience for everyone attending the MCG.
“This new parking system will really assist fans who can better plan their journey to the ‘G and help us reduce long queues in the precinct and manage capacity in the parklands,” Mr Eltringham said.
“For those who opt to drive to the footy, we believe this will alleviate a lot of concerns and uncertainty that were apparent before the introduction of this pre-paid parking model.
“We encourage everyone to plan their journey to the footy ahead of time and this new system allows exactly that.”
Parking can be purchased through the MCG website until sales are exhausted or until the start of the match. Please note entry to Yarra Park will close 15 minutes after the first bounce.
Should Yarra Park have to be closed due to weather conditions, patrons will be provided as much notice as possible and refunds will be issued.
