JACK Viney says he understands the significance of Melbourne’s victory at Simonds Stadium on Sunday, given its poor recent record at the Cattery.

Melbourne produced one of its finest wins of the past decade, defeating the Cats by 24 points at Geelong. It was just Melbourne’s sixth win from 37 matches at the Cattery since 1967 – and just its third victory at the ground since 1988.

Viney said he was fully aware of Melbourne’s history at Geelong, given his father Todd was a star for the club and was a member of the win in 1988.

“Certainly, being a Melbourne supporter, I know it hasn’t happened for a while,” he said at AAMI Park on Monday.

“Going down there, you know you’re not as confident, but we thought we prepared really well and did all of our homework. We got the right matchups and stuck to our game plan and it came good.

“Wins don’t come along too often, especially down there, so it’s a fantastic result and the boys are rapt.

“No doubt, it’s terrific for the supporter base as well. We had a really good turn out from the Dees fans.

“To get them along and get a win for them was special and I’m sure everyone is still celebrating.”

Meanwhile, Viney thanked the Melbourne supporters for sticking by the club in tough times.

“We haven’t been too successful in recent years and they’ve stuck by us and we’ve got a really strong supporter base,” he said.
