MIDFIELDER Dom Tyson says new teammate and four-time premiership star Jordan Lewis made an immediate impact at training at Gosch’s Paddock on Monday.
With the four-plus year players returning for their first day of the 2017 pre-season, Tyson said Lewis’ impact was quickly felt.
“He was terrific early and he’s already using his voice out on the track,” he told Melbourne TV.
“He has plenty of experience … and Paddy [McKenna] has trained for plenty of weeks now and Hibbo (Michael Hibberd) and Melky (Jake Melksham) are easing into it, because they’ve had time away, and even Corey Maynard.
“Everyone’s showing some good signs early.”
Tyson said there were always a few nerves starting pre-season training.
“It was really good to get back into things, particularly as a full list.”
“There were some new coaches, some new faces and some new players, so it was good to mix it all with everyone.
“It was a pretty solid hit-out first-up actually. We had a bit of a time-trial earlier and then into skills, so everyone looks in good shape, so it’s exciting times for us.”
Tyson, who finished fourth in Melbourne’s best and fairest last season, said he had already pinpointed several areas of his game he wanted to build on over summer.
“It’s just good to get some continuity and [I just want to] try to train every session and improve on certain areas of my game that we can identify with coaches,” he said.
“I want to build relationships with new players and staff, so it’s a good time of the year because you can really focus on the little things and still do the main sessions and get plenty out of the game style.
“But it’s also time to work on some individual craft areas of your game that can really come out in season. It’s a good time of the year.”
The 23-year-old said it was great to be back into it after a “good break”.
“I headed overseas with Tom McDonald for four or five weeks to the [United] States [of America] and got plenty of sport in over there and saw a few of the sights,” he said.
“We moved around a bit, so it was good to get a feel for it. It was election time over there as well, so there was plenty happening at that time of year.”
