Win on the road significant: Macdonald
JOEL Macdonald says he took greater delight from winning on the road, as opposed to the Demons beating his former side
Macdonald, who played in Melbourne’s round five win over the Lions at the MCG, said he had well and truly moved on from his former club, after departing at the end of the 2009 season.
“I’m with the Dees now and everyone has moved on and for me personally, it’s just awesome to get a win on the road, especially at the Gabba,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“The Lions play well at the Gabba and they’re a side that can come back from behind - no matter how many points they are down. The boys are starting to show some maturity and we’re just starting to click, so to me that’s exciting.
“[It was good] because it’s the Lions and also because we’re starting to get a few wins on the road - and we talked about that at the start of the year and we really wanted to address that.”
Although the Lions came back in the second half - the Demons won by 10 points, despite kicking just two goals after the main break.
But Macdonald said it was still a critical win, considering Melbourne’s impressive 9.5 to 4.5 first half start.
“It’s significant because we started well on the road,” he said.
“We got the four points and we’ll address what we did wrong in the second half, but the boys are getting some camaraderie happening and building for some really good years I reckon.
“The boys have started to get the right attitude to traveling and it’s only going to make us better.”
Macdonald said there were some nervous moments in the second half, before the Demons steadied via a long bomb from Lynden Dunn in the final term.
“I don’t know if we started to get a bit ahead of ourselves, but there was a sign in the second half when Mitch Clark went harder at the footy,” he said.
“I thought ‘I hope this isn’t the start of this resurgence’.
“We hung on, to the boys’ credit, in a hostile crowd, so you’ll take the points, even if they come back right at the end and you still end up winning by a point.”
