MELBOURNE has secured outstanding young Greater Western Sydney midfielder Dom Tyson, plus picks No.9 and No.53.
In exchange, the Demons have given the Giants three draft selections: No.2, No.20 and No.72.
The 20 year-old is an excellent clearance player with fine vision and awareness. Tyson also possesses genuine composure with ball in hand, and is an excellent disposer by foot or hand.
Tyson, who was originally selected at No.3 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, made his AFL debut in GWS’ inaugural home and away clash against the Sydney Swans in round one, 2012.
Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney said: “We’ve been able to bring in a class midfielder in Tyson, and improve our second draft selection from pick 20 to pick 9 in what we see as a fairly even draft.
We have also been able to improve our pick 72 to pick 53, so the net effect of the deal is very positive for the Melbourne Football Club.”
“Dom is a tall midfielder who is exceptional around the stoppages and has a unique ability to find a gap in traffic. He is strong overhead, he has good touch and depth with his kicking.
“Dom comes with a good strong character, and fits the age and positional profile that we need to improve upon. He complements our young core of midfielders who can grow together over the next 10 years.
“Dom also has the benefit of being in the AFL system for two years as he understands the level of competition and the standards required to be a professional AFL player. He can come in and play straight away.
He played 10 matches in his first year, but battled some niggling injuries, including a shin problem, which sidelined him for seven matches from rounds 12 to 18.
But he finished the season in brilliant form, with 24 disposals against St Kilda in round 22 and 26 touches against North Melbourne in round 23.
Tyson received a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for his effort against the Kangaroos.
In 2013, Tyson was sidelined when he hurt his posterior cruciate ligament at training before Christmas 2012.
He played three matches this year, with his first appearance coming against the Swans in round 16. He managed to return for the Giants’ final two matches of the season.
In total, he has played 13 AFL matches.
Before he joined the Giants, Tyson captained the Oakleigh Chargers in 2011. In his final NAB AFL under-18 championships match in 2010, he amassed 29 disposals and 10 marks, and laid five tackles.
