JOSH Wagner says he’s not taking his place in the team for granted, even though he feels part of the Melbourne side.

The first-year Melbourne rookie has played the past four matches after making his AFL debut against North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena.

The Queenslander notched up 24 disposals in his second appearance for Melbourne against Collingwood at the MCG and has been an impressive performer in the early stages of his career.

Wagner, who will return to his home state to play Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, said he felt he confident playing at the highest level.

“I feel so, and I hope everybody feels the same [way I do], but I feel comfortable [in the team] and if I keep doing my role, then I hope I keep getting a game,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“As long as I’m playing well and doing it for the team, I hope I keep getting a spot.

“It definitely still hasn’t sunk in, but I just take each day as it comes and each week, but it’s been awesome.”

It’s almost been a month since Wagner made his AFL debut in Hobart, which he said he flown, but he’s relished being given his opportunity early in the year after he was drafted at No.6 in last November’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

“It has gone quick [since I made my debut against North Melbourne in round three],” he said.

“The standard is much quicker – you’re playing against more experienced blokes and bigger, stronger opponents.

“You just try and keep up with them and do your best. If you play your role – it all works out.”
