MELBOURNE is hopeful midfielder/forward Colin Sylvia will return from a broken jaw in round two, but a timeframe has yet to be established for Austin Wonaeamirri who suffered a hamstring injury on the weekend.

Melbourne football operations manager Chris Connolly said Sylvia had been penciled in for the April 3 clash against Collingwood at the MCG.

"Col had a clean break, so it's been wired up and he'll return in about round two," Connolly said.

"He stayed in hospital on Saturday night - he was operated first thing on Sunday - and was at our team meeting on Monday.

"We're hopeful for round two, but we'll just have to see how he goes with training."

Sylvia suffered the break during the third quarter of Saturday's NAB Challenge loss to West Coast Eagles. The incident occurred after Sylvia collided with West Coast's Josh Kennedy, who was shepherding for teammate Chris Masten.

The incident was reviewed by the match review panel, which did not deem the contact unreasonable in the circumstances.

Connolly said a cautious approach would now be taken with Wonaeamirri, who has endured a frustrating run with injury having suffered a hamstring injury in the 2009 NAB Cup and again before last Christmas.

Wonaeamirri also missed most of last season with a knee injury and was unable to play a game for the Demons.

"He was having scans today (Monday), so we're not sure of the severity of the injury, but once that's worked out, we'll put the right programs in place and take a conservative approach with his injury," Connolly said.
