First quarter
Fremantle started strongly with two in two minutes, before Nathan Jones opened Melbourne’s account with a beauty on the run.
Just one more goal was added for the term, via Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands, as Melbourne steadied and worked hard in the contest.
Although Fremantle had eight scoring shots to four by quarter-time, Melbourne trailed by just 14 points.

Second quarter
The Demons reduced the margin back to seven points early in the second term, when Jack Fitzpatrick kicked his first goal for the year.
But when Tendai Mzungu booted his second, it started a four goal streak from the home side.
At half-time, Melbourne trailed by 32 points.

Third quarter
Fremantle led by 48 points after booting four goals to two for the term.
But just before time-on, the home side led by 53 points, after Hayden Ballantyne bagged his third.
Sam Blease provided one of the few Melbourne highlights for the quarter when he kicked an outstanding set-shot goal from the pocket. Teammate James Sellar was the only goalscorer for the Demons in this period.

Final quarter
The match was all but over heading into the final term.
Fremantle added three goals - including two from Jon Griffin - to Melbourne’s one. Fitzpatrick added his second to become the red and blue’s only multiple goalkicker.
In the end, the Demons went down by 61 points to end a disappointing 2012 campaign.
