RETIRING Demon Aaron Davey could do a Jim Stynes and play his last match with the Australian International Rules series team, after he was named in the extended squad to take on Ireland this October.

Davey, who represented Australia in 2005-06, will be part of the Indigenous squad, set to take on Ireland for the first time.

Stynes played his last match for Melbourne in the 1998 second preliminary final and then represented Australia against Ireland, before finally hanging up the boots.

Davey said he was right behind the concept, and was eager to be a part of the Indigenous team set to take on the Irish.

“I said from day one, I’d be keen on being a part of it,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“It’ll be a great experience. The only other [Indigenous] team to travel overseas was when Tom Wills took over the Indigenous cricket team in the 1860s, so it’ll be pretty special.”

Davey said it was a great opportunity to promote both the AFL and the Indigenous culture in Ireland.

“There are a lot of similarities with the Irish and Aboriginal cultures,” he said.

“It’s two great cultures playing off in a game, and it’s more about the AFL brand itself.

“But I also get the great opportunity to play – and I already have – but to play with the Indigenous and Torres Strait Island boys against a culture that’s been pretty similar in a way to their history and past, should be good.”
