Casey fans may have come to expect a fast start from its VFL side, but on Saturday it didn’t get that.

Instead, the Demons had to come from behind to win its 13th consecutive game this VFL season as it overcame Port Melbourne by 58 points.

The Borough got off to the fast start in the first term, sitting the Demons on their heels, before Casey regathered and put together a stellar three quarters to run away 18.11 (119 ) to 8.13 (61) winners.

Four goals in both the second and third quarters meant the Demons quickly whittled away their 18-point quarter time deficit, before an eight-goal last quarter confirmed another massive win for the Dees.

Kade Chandler was instrumental to the fightback, dominating in both the middle and up forward to kick two second quarter goals.

The first of his second term brace came from a goal worthy of the highlights reel, as he got out the back on a fast break before side-stepping two Port Melbourne defenders and finishing on his left.

Chandler ended up amassing 27 disposals and a bag of five goals to lead his side to another strong win.

Despite being challenged in the first term, Casey coach said his side found ways to turn the game around and regain the lead in the second term.

“We were caught off guard from a defensive standpoint, we were beaten around the ball and we didn’t play with the ball in our half so we had to get back and support our defensive half,” Corrigan said.

“We were slightly off with that in the first term, they got goal side of us.

“So we adjusted that and it was much better.”

Joining Chandler in the best on ground rankings was Luke Dunstan, who had the ball on a string in the middle.

Finishing with eight clearances to go with his 23 possessions, Dunstan’s class complimented the strength of Jimmy Munro (16 touches, 12 tackles, eight clearances) perfectly.

Following Chandler’s magic to start the second quarter, Trent Rivers stood up with a classy left foot goal before Munro gave the Demons the lead when he snapped truly from a stoppage.

Chandler’s second goal in the dying stages of the half meant Casey had already resurrected its slump as it went into the main break a goal in front.

With tall targets in Mitch Brown and Jacob van Rooyen both being late withdrawals as they went to Adelaide as emergencies for Melbourne’s AFL clash, Corrigan had to quickly find new forward targets.

In the second half, some young guns emerged to prove Casey had enough depth to overcome many challenges.

Luca Goonan was one who shone, heading forward and booting two goals in the third term to increase the Demons’ lead.

Roan Steele also finished with two goals in another classy performance, including a wonderful crumbing goal in the third term that continued Casey’s momentum.

Corrigan said his young brigade of VFL players continue to seize opportunities when they get the time to shine.

“It was brilliant to see,” Corrigan said. “Of course, you’d love a healthy AFL contingent in the side, but the reason why you put time into a VFL program is for guys to put in the work and flourish, like what we got today.

“About every key position player today was a VFL-listed player, it was good for them to stand up and perform like that.”

With Goonan, Steele and Chandler all kicking goals in another attacking third term, the Demons went into the main break ahead by 21 points despite the siren beating Ryan Valentine as he waltzed into an open goal.

But Casey quickly amended it in the final term, as Corey Ellison completed a fine day at either end when he waltzed forward and kicked a goal.

Another youngster in Miles Shepherd followed with his first goal for the day, as he and Tyler Edwards both provided valuable moments when required in the impressive win.

When Dunstan converted in front of the big sticks to make his great day even better, the Demons sluggish start had evaporated into a 39-point lead.

Chandler then went one better with his fourth goal, breaking tackles and weaving through traffic before snapping through the middle.

The highlight kept coming, as Shepherd showed his versatility in front of goals when he dribbled through a beauty for his second before Bailey Laurie let loose from range twice in as many minutes to rain down goals.

Chandler then won a free kick and converted to register a bag of five majors to confirm his dominant day in the Casey sunshine.

For large parts of the game, Port Melbourne looked dangerous and threatening to Casey’s unbeaten VFL run in 2022.

Although Corrigan is nonplussed about maintaining the Demons’ winning streak, he said he was pleased to see his young side respond to numerous challenges and work hard for another win.

“This win is right up there because of how we were challenged in the first quarter,” Corrigan said. “When you’re challenged like that it can go two ways – you can reset and come out better or you can potentially let the game slip.

“For me, given the fact we had a big VFL-side in and the way we played in the last three weeks against a good side, it was a fantastic performance.”
