TOMORROW NIGHT, a group of aspiring footballers will start their journey in the AFLW.
When their name is called at the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft, they’ll take the next step into becoming an elite athlete.
Nearly 12 months on from their own draft experience, Tahlia Gillard and Georgia Campbell sat down to reflect on their personal journey’s and offered some advice for those set to become Demons in the next 24 hours…
FAVOURITE DRAFT MOMENT…
Campbell: “Officially getting my name called out. Because of the father-daughter [pick], I did have some reassurance, but really hearing [my name] was special."
Gillard: “I wasn’t expecting it, so when Todd [Patterson] called me and told me, it was a big shock. There were a few other people in the room too, so everyone congratulated me."
FIRST DAY ADVICE…
Campbell: “Be yourself. I held back at first because I was shy, but I think when you are yourself, you just feel so much more comfortable."
Gillard: “All of the girls put in so much effort and they'll make you feel comfortable. That is the sort of environment Melbourne is, so don't be stressed."
AFLW ADVICE…
Campbell: “Make sure you use the program as much as you can. Take every opportunity they give you, whether that's nutrition or doing extras. Putting in all the work you can with what the club provides for you, that will make you better."
Gillard: "Be prepared. There's a lot of hours that go into it, so make sure to use the resources when they are there, because with each session you go to, you're moving further in your development."
WHAT TO EXPECT AT MELBOURNE...
Campbell: “You'll build so many friendships and relationships with staff and players. We've all become like family, which has been so much fun to be at the club nearly everyday."
Gillard: "The standard is so high, there's such a big increase from NAB League football and all of your teammates and everyone at the club will push you to become better. That's how I've developed so quickly, learning off our talented list."
