IN HIS FIRST 43 games of AFL footy, Luke Jackson has passed every test thrown his way.
The 20-year-old has already got a NAB AFL Rising Star trophy and a premiership medal to his name, standing up on the big stage last September.
But his most recent outing – against the Lions at the MCG – may have been the biggest challenge of his three-year career to date.
For just the second time in the red and blue, Jackson took to the field without his skipper, Max Gawn, by his side.
With that, came a responsibility to carry the load as starting ruckman for the Demons.
And as expected, Jackson went about his business in his usual non-fuss manner.
“I just wanted to try to play my natural game,” he told Melbourne Media.
“Obviously a massive loss with Gawny out, so I just wanted to compete at a high level and just try play my role to the best I can.
“[It was] good to contribute to the win as well.”
Giving away five centimetres and eight kilograms to Lion Oscar McInerney, the aerial battle was never going to be easy.
And while McInerney’s presences was still felt, Jackson came away with a season-high 21 disposals, 18 hit-outs and nine tackles.
Plus, a last quarter goal which got him up and about.
“I love it,” Jackson said.
“It comes pretty rare for me to kick some good goals, so I celebrate when I can.”
Jackson’s efforts went a long way to helping the Demons record a 64-point win in the top of the table clash, handing the club some momentum ahead of its last eight games of the season.
“All the boys are just so pumped to get back on the winners’ list,” he said.
“It was such good fun out there – we love it.”
