MAX Gawn has proved to be the star of an otherwise disappointing night for the Dees.
The skipper polled a game-high 10 votes in the race for AFLCA Champion Player of the Year, putting up a standout performance in the team’s 12-point loss to Sydney on Saturday.
While it was a tough battle on the ‘G that saw Melbourne suffer its second loss of the season, Gawn was a beacon of reliability for the Dees both in the forward line and across the ground registering a total of 28 disposals, 23 contested possessions, 30 hitouts and three goals.
Vice-captain Jack Viney was the only other Demon to collect votes during the loss, receiving two after producing a 32-disposal game.
Sydney’s Sam Reid (six), Paddy McCartin (four), Logan McDonald (four), Callum Mills (four) were all recognised for their impact in the club’s win.
Despite not polling during Round 12, Demon Clayton Oliver remains atop the AFLCA leaderboard with a total of 63 votes, with Christian Petracca (50 votes) and Gawn (40 votes) not too far behind.
