Davey bounces back
Veteran Aaron Davey turned back the clock with his best performance since early 2011, with three goals and 19 touches against the Tigers. It was also his best return in front of goal since he booted three majors against Fremantle in round seven, 2008. Davey, who had started as sub three times from his five previous games this year, made the most of his full match this time around. “I’ve been subbed a fair few times this year - I was just eager to get my opportunity to have a full game and I just set myself to get out there and inspire my teammates and try and get us up early,” he told melbournefc.com.au. “It felt good going out there, but my job’s a lot easier when there’s 22 blokes going out there playing and caring for each other like we did today.”
Frawley v Riewoldt – the tussle continues
In recent years, defender James Frawley and Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt have had some fine duels. Again, it was another intriguing encounter on the weekend. Although Riewoldt kicked three goals, given he’s now got 27 for the year, the damage could’ve been greater. Frawley said it was a pretty even contest in the wash-up. “He kicked a couple on me, but it was a pretty good tussle and he’s a good player,” he told melbournefc.com.au. “That goal at the end of the third quarter – I didn’t know he had a left foot, as he went the wrong side. Overall, I thought it was a good battle and I thought it was pretty even. He kicked three goals, but as a full-back, you try and stop them.”
Terlich and M.Jones deliver again
The duo has been one of Melbourne’s brightest spots in an otherwise tough year. Having been recruited as mature age players – and at later draft choices – they have more than delivered. It’s been a credit to them both, as they forge their careers in difficult times. Terlich was one of Melbourne’s best against the Tigers with 21 disposals, while Jones had 18 touches and five inside 50s. They have produced consistently, and it will be fascinating to see where they are in Melbourne’s best and fairest count.
Dees win fifth quarter for year
It’s not a flattering stat, but given that wins, let alone quarters won, have been hard to come by for the Demons this year, they did manage to win their fifth quarter for the year. The Dees won the opening term by two points – and then proceeded to remain in the hunt for much of the match. For the record, Melbourne’s other quarters won this year have been against Greater Western Sydney (first quarter and final term), Carlton (second quarter), Gold Coast Suns (fourth term).
The challenge continues …
Melbourne’s effort against Richmond couldn’t be knocked. But it must continue – regardless of the result – for the rest of the season. Again, it won’t be easy next week. In fact, the trip to Perth, taking on Fremantle at Patersons Stadium is one of footy’s greatest challenges. Melbourne has a shocking recent record at Patersons Stadium – its most recent win at the ground came against Fremantle in round 11, 2004 – but the Demons must produce the type of intent they showed at the Tigers. Producing four quarters of effort against Freo on their home soil is a genuine challenge the Demons must confront head-on.
