MELBOURNE has made four changes to its final 22 for Sunday’s clash against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium, including midfielder/half-forward Dom Barry for his first AFL match.

But the Demons lost defender Tom McDonald during the day on Friday, following an injured right calf.

Barry, who was initially brought into the 25-man squad on Thursday night, was then named as an emergency on Friday. But he gained a call-up later on Friday afternoon, when McDonald was ruled out.

The Demons then recalled defender Dean Terlich to their starting 18, after he was originally named on the seven-man bench.

Melbourne has also included ruckman Max Gawn and runner Daniel Nicholson, who have both been named on the bench, along with Barry and first-year Demon Christian Salem.

Former Crow Aidan Riley, who has played the past two matches, has been relegated to an emergency.

Defender Alex Georgiou, who was also in the initial 25-man squad, has also been named an emergency. Tough-nut Luke Tapscott, who wasn’t initially in the squad, has been added as an emergency, given McDonald’s absence.

Barry, 20, from Alice Springs, said he couldn’t wait to debut.

“I’m very excited – very excited to say the least,” he told Dee TV.

“Initially, I was a carryover emergency and then I trained today and Tommy McDonald had a bit of a niggle, so he can’t play this week. I got elevated onto the main team, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Barry, who is in his second season at the club, played in last year’s Indigenous All Stars team that represented Australia against Ireland in the International Rules Series.

He was also an emergency against Greater Western Sydney in round three, but has since been building his form in the VFL and produced a strong run-with role last weekend.

Earlier in the week, the Demons lost midfielders Daniel Cross (broken leg) and Jordie McKenzie (suspension) out of the side.

Cross is expected to miss the next four to six matches and McKenzie accepted a one-match sanction for striking North Melbourne’ Lindsay Thomas last round.

Terlich has played 11 matches this season and has been an emergency for the past two rounds. But coach Paul Roos flagged his inclusion back in the team earlier in the week.

Gawn has played three matches this year from rounds nine to 11, after a hamstring interrupted the start of his season. He has since been in good form in the VFL and two weeks ago had 63 hit outs.

Nicholson has yet to add to his 31 matches in 2014, but has been an emergency six times this year. His has been a very consistent performer for Casey this season.

The rejuvenated Neville Jetta will play his 50th AFL match this round, after playing eight matches this season.

Jetta, who was relegated to the rookie list for the 2014 season, has since bounced back to career-best form, after injuries had previously halted his game.

Meanwhile, this round’s clash against the Demons and Bulldogs will have a curtain-raiser: the second AFL women’s exhibition match – also between the Dees and Dogs – which will start at 10.10 am. The round 15 clash will then start at 1.10 pm.
