A LAST quarter fightback has seen the Casey Demons record an unlikely 10-point victory in Round 1 of its VFLW campaign.
Faced with a 10-point three quarter-time deficit, the Demons, who went goalless in the opening half, had their backs against the wall against Port Melbourne at Casey Fields.
But a spirited final term display, including two goals on the trot from Melbourne replacement player Maeve Chaplin, saw the Dees claim the points on Saturday morning.
Alison Dower mirrored Chaplin’s efforts with two majors, putting through a sealer with just over one minute remaining on the clock.
Despite Casey’s early struggles to hit the scoreboard, it always looked dangerous with 13 more inside 50s and 75 more disposals, eventually grinding The Borough down.
Former Cat Liv Purcell, who is edging closer to a Melbourne debut upon return from an ACL injury, led the way with a game-high 20 disposals, while Krstel Petrevski did her chances of a recall no harm with 19 touches and 10 tackles.
The Demons will be looking to make it two from two next Saturday, when they face the Darebin Falcons at La Trobe Uni from 10am.
