EVERY player on Melbourne’s women’s list has received a ring in recognition of their recruitment to the club.
All 27 players were given their silver band ring at a special in-house induction at the MCG on Friday evening.
Melbourne plans to make it a tradition that every time a new women’s player is drafted or recruited to the club that they will gain a ring.
Melbourne women’s football operations manager Debbie Lee said the rings were a great way to commemorate the inaugural list.
“We thought ‘what can we give the girls that they can take away with them and they can have for life?’” she told Melbourne TV.
“[We wanted] something that reminds them of the Melbourne Football Club. As a result, we’ve come up with the idea of developing the rings.
“The girls can wear them from day-to-day, if they choose or they can keep them in the gifted box.”
“A great way to celebrate [the inaugural year of the AFL Women’s competition] is with these rings … whether they play one, two or 10 years with us.”
Melbourne marquee recruit Daisy Pearce said the club wanted to give the players something special and highlight how important they are to the club. Her stepfather, Joel, a jeweler, made the rings.
“We thought it was important that it was connected to Melbourne,” she said.
“It’s a reminder to me that this is the AFL and a reminder that they’ve been a part of something really big and special.
“Hopefully in its own little way, it helps to build that unity moving forward.”
Pearce added: “A premiership one to sit next to it might be nice.”
