COACH Mark Neeld says the coaching staff will closely review Melbourne’s final quarter fade-out against Carlton at the MCG on Sunday.

The Demons went down by 58 points, after trailing by just 16 points at three quarter-time.

Neeld conceded his team’s clearance work fell away in the last term, but he was determined to drill down further for answers on his side’s disappointing finish.

“We worked all week about what we wanted to serve up as a group and we wanted some continued improvement. And we wanted to be better than what we were last week against Sydney and we did that,” he said.

“We focused on a few areas and for three quarters, we were quite pleased. Clearance rate aside, we were in an arm wrestle for three quarters, so we’ve got to keep learning. But we’ll sit down and analyse in particular that last quarter.

“We’ll look for some improvement and we’ve got to get better than playing three quarters and that’s clearly part of the message.”

Neeld said it was a genuine struggle for most of the match, until Carlton ran away in the final term, kicking seven goals to zip.

“It was probably a combination of a few things, but we went for three quarters and couldn’t seal the deal and it’s not going to beat AFL sides,” Neeld said.
