MELBOURNE has added to its top-end talent, securing Jacob van Rooyen with pick No.19 in the 2021 National Draft.
The 18-year-old learned his fate on Wednesday night, as the first round of the Draft was called out at Marvel Stadium.
Coming from Western Australia, van Rooyen has had the chance to play more footy than most in the past two years, pulling on the Claremont guernsey at under 18 level.
Standing at 194cm, van Rooyen could prove to be a handy swingman, with experience playing key position roles at either end of the ground.
Some fancy van Rooyen as a tall defender after developing his craft throughout 2021, but his ability to hit the scoreboard and take a contested mark up forward could be where he provides most value for the Dees.
The Demons entered the Draft with pick No.17 to their name following a trade with the Western Bulldogs, but that selection was pushed back due to father-son bidding from the Dogs and Pies.
The remainder of the Draft will take place on Thursday night, where Melbourne will have three picks at its disposal – currently 38, 42 and 50 – if it opts to use them all.
“He’s a really competitive player…his contest in the air and at ground level is really strong.” 🙌
