MIDFIELDER Dom Tyson says that future coach Simon Goodwin has been a valuable addition to Melbourne this year.
Goodwin, who will take over the senior coaching position from Paul Roos in 2017, worked with Tyson in Melbourne’s midfield group this year.
Speaking to Dee TV, Tyson said that he has enjoyed working with Goodwin who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him.
“He [Goodwin] is just super professional; [he] can talk you through things and stay calm and manage you through some scenarios and gives you a plan on how to get better as a player which is really good,” he said.
“He has seen a lot and done a lot as a [premiership] player and [was] a superstar at Adelaide and a really distinguished coach already.
“He’s really good to work with; he’s a got a lot of little tricks at craft and stoppage and just has a really good plan for you as a player.”
Tyson said that Melbourne’s midfield group were evolving well and would continue to push to improve.
“It’s what you need [in the midfield]; you need really good depth and on any given day, if one’s quiet then someone else just steps up or everyone is playing good footy,” he said.
“If you look around at the good sides, it’s not just one or two [players] carrying the load, it’s three or four or even six or seven who can go through there and play really good footy.
“I think we’re building that really nicely.”
Tyson said that Melbourne’s on-field gains this year had shown him that the team is on the right path.
“Throughout the year, I’ve enjoyed the wins as much as ever,” he said.
“There were some games, which were probably some of the best games of footy that I’ve been a part of in my time in AFL where [we put in] in real four-quarter performances like the Collingwood [and against] Geelong [and] Gold Coast.
“For the years to come, that’s what motivates me to continue to push myself.”
