IT'S been eight weeks since Melbourne-based supporters have been able to attend an AFL game.

And with the AFL’s announcement yesterday, that the 2021 Toyota AFL Grand Final will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth, it looks like it’ll be an even longer wait.  

According to Melbourne wingman Angus Brayshaw, the presence of the Demon faithful is something the players are very much missing.

“The longer footy goes on without fans the more acutely we’re all aware that it’s not the same without them,” Brayshaw said.

“The West Australian contingent of supporters are very strong, we’re very excited to have all of them come to the games.

“But the bulk of our supporters are back home in Melbourne, so we’re missing them dearly.

“We’re really only playing for the supporters, bringing them pride and happiness.”

After defeating Brisbane by 33 points on Saturday and securing themselves a spot in the Preliminary Final next weekend, the Demons will now look to enjoy a week off while in their Perth quarantine hub.

“At this point of the week, we’re trying to relax,” Brayshaw said.

"I think the tendency is for blokes to get excited for these big games obviously, but the reality is we're a while off playing.

“For now we’re just recovering and resting, and we’ll start gearing up for the prelim in a couple of days."

Melbourne’s Preliminary Final will take place on Friday 10 September at Optus Stadium, with their opponent to be determined following the result of the Geelong v GWS game on Friday 3 September.
