MELBOURNE has named key forward Chris Dawes and midfielder Bernie Vince for Saturday’s round two clash against Greater Western Sydney at StarTrack Oval.
Speedster Jay Kennedy-Harris and utility Jimmy Toumpas have been squeezed out of the side.
Kennedy-Harris has been named emergency, along with ball-winner Viv Michie and ruckman Jake Spencer, who both showed strong form for Casey in a VFL practice match against Collingwood at Olympic Park Oval last Saturday.
Dawes has been rushed straight back into the senior side, after he was suspended for one match in the final home and away round last year for striking North Melbourne skipper Andrew Swallow.
Vince, who finished third in Melbourne’s best and fairest award in 2014, has played the past two matches for Casey in the VFL practice match series, after overcoming a hamstring injury.
Manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said Melbourne’s round one win over the Gold Coast Suns at the MCG made it a tough match committee.
“Last week’s strong team performance across the board made selection difficult this week,” he said.
“Match committee has decided to bring in two experienced players into the line-up – Chris Dawes and Bernie Vince.
“Bernie has had a limited pre-season and has played the last two games at Casey and is now fit to play, while Chris missed through suspension.
“There was a lot of discussion around the team structure for this week and there was always going to be some unlucky players to miss out.”
Mahoney said selection quandaries were a great problem to have.
“We hope that match committee will continue to be difficult,” he said.
“A number of players have performed well with the Casey Scorpions and we hope that they continue to put pressure on players at AFL level, so they will continue to perform.”
Melbourne will play its sixth match for premierships points at StarTrack Oval (Manuka Oval), with its most recent appearance coming in round 21, 2012 when it defeated Greater Western Sydney.
The match starts at 2.10pm.
